Introduction

Description

A tiny municipality located at the end of the side valley of the same name, about 30 km from Aosta and a little over 1700 m above sea level. The place name, apart from the suffix dedicated to the cult of the Madonna, is of uncertain origin: the most accredited hypothesis has it derived from the Provençal word rema, meaning oar and/or trunk. Once home to shepherds and farmers tied to the harsh subsistence economy typical of the most isolated places, the village is now a popular tourist centre, both in summer and winter. In fact, as far as the summer is concerned, Rhêmes-Notre-Dame offers, in addition to its grandiose landscapes, an almost uncontaminated nature, since half of its territory is included in the Gran Paradiso National Park, and a large part of the remainder is included in the private reserve of the Rossi di Montelera family. In winter, on the other hand, tourists can count on 20 km of cross-country skiing trails and a few small facilities for downhill skiing, particularly suitable for beginners.
