Punta di Terrarossa, from the Simplon Passol

Access

From Domodossola, go up to Val Divedro, pass the Swiss customs, and climb up to the Simplon Pass, parking in front of the hospice.

Introduction

The Punta di Terrarossa is a privileged balcony over the north-western slope of Monte Leone and its beautiful icy masses. The south-west ridge access to Terrarossa, contrary to appearances, is relatively easy, and one can easily find the best route on the south side while avoiding the more challenging sections (otherwise non-compulsory II steps). The descent by the normal route to the south takes place on steep scree slopes that are certainly more favourable to descend. An excursion to be carried out with optimal visibility conditions, both for the route and to enjoy the views.

Description

From the Simplon Pass hospice, the trail climbs directly to the rear of the car park over a steep ramp. This connects with the level path coming from the north side of the Simplon Pass and follows it for the entire flat section. The path now climbs up the valley among large debris to a plateau at an altitude of 2516m. From here, the trail climbs up the rocks to the left and over the lateral moraine of the glacier along the Chaltroassertal, and follows it to the threshold of the lake of the same name in view of the hut. One then climbs decisively to the left to reach the Maderlicke pass and, on the level, to the right, the Terrarossa pass, below the south-west ridge of the peak of the same name. Climb up the said ridge with easy climbing, possibly resting on its southern side to avoid major difficulties, to the summit. For the descent, go down the steep scree slope to the south to reach the hut and reconnect with the morning's route near the lake.
