.Introduction
A round-trip itinerary that climbs the western slope of the Colma di Monbarone starting from the hamlet of Torre Daniele, in the municipality of Settimo Vittone, reaching the church of Trovinasse at 1,374 m along a system of historical mule tracks that have been largely preserved. The route passes through characteristic environments of the Canavese foothills: pergola vineyards with truncated conical pillars, chestnut forests, hamlets perched on rocky spurs, alpine pastures and high meadows. The mule tracks - carefully paved, with regular steps - represent an important infrastructural heritage, built in pre-modern times to connect the valley bottoms to the pastures and settlements at high altitudes. The difficulty is moderate along the entire route, with sustained but never technical gradients; the total ascent of around 1,090m requires good physical fitness. The best time of year is from April to October; in autumn, the vineyards of Cesnola and the intermediate hamlets are particularly colourful.
Description
[0h00'T2] 0.00km From the car park, take the small road that leads to the Church of San Pietro with its characteristic detached bell tower. Continue through the alleys to Via Circonvallazione and a little further on, you will come to a signpost with the start of the path at a drinking trough. In this first section, the mule track is covered with asphalt - the steps are difficult to negotiate with wheels. A few hundred metres and the stone houses give way to pergola vineyards, supported by the typical truncated cone-shaped pillars. When the slope becomes steeper, the steps appear, regular and never too high. The mule track runs between two high dry stone walls; a flat section opens up to a view of Torredaniele and Quincinetto, overlooked by Bec Renon two thousand metres higher up. After a last flight of steps, you reach the hamlet of Sengie, perched on rocky spurs, with a characteristic little alpine church surmounted by a small brick bell tower.
[0h30'T2] 1.05km Go along a short stretch of asphalt road, then rejoin the mule track on the left. Climb up between the chestnut trees and shortly cross the mule track coming from Cesnola (it. E2). Continuing on, at a hairpin bend on the right, a path branches off to the left that descends to the Chiussuma stream and joins the GTA path (it. D1). Continue left on the paved road; the ascent becomes steeper, with long steps, until reaching a clearing with a group of huts. Continue to the left until meeting the Guarda mule track (it. E5), for a stretch covered with a track (altitude 820m). Leaving the it. E5, one encounters a small pylon dating from 1948. Just beyond, the few houses of Chiaverina. The mule track continues uphill from the hamlet.
[0h30'T2] 3.70km At an altitude of 1,060m, cross the mule track to the right to Cornaley (E3). Shortly afterwards cross the tarmac road, follow it uphill for 100m until you come to a steep ramp on the right that becomes a well-paved mule track. After a few hairpin bends, you reach a mountain pasture; cross the asphalt road again and, after a stretch of mule track bordered by stone walls, you reach the Alpi Surro. When you reach the carriage road, walk along it for about 100m through a birch grove, until you come to a grassy mule track that branches off to the right and climbs up a meadow. The mule track becomes a small road, first asphalted then dirt, which crosses a group of houses. At a hairpin bend to the right, follow the path that crosses an irrigation ditch and then a stream over a wooden bridge to reach a mountain pasture. Continue on the path through a small wood, then on a mule track lined with low walls that cuts across a steep meadow until reaching the asphalt road. Follow the road downhill for about 80m until it meets the steep mule track to the right, which soon reaches the church of San Quirico (1,374m) after a moderately uphill stretch in the woods.
