Camino Francés de Santiago from Palas de Rei to Melide
Introduction
The devotional route has several possibilities and the so-called 'French' route starts in the Pyrenees. In the summer of 2022, the last six stages were covered, arriving in Santiago... below is a summary description of the third one.
Description
At the start, a pylon marks 68.014 km in Santiago. At the beginning of Palas de Rei, you will find the church of San Tirso. Leaving the village, the route follows a beautiful modern paved road. There is no lack of stretches in the forest, touching on the inevitable Horreos near the villages. A scene from another era suddenly appears: two men from the Guardia Civil ride past the houses... The church of San Xulian del Camino appears and then a washhouse with a fountain. The trees are dense and it all adds to the interest. When we reach the hamlet of O Coto, although it is relatively early, we decide to take a break at a very nice place with a beautiful garden (Casa de los Somoza). Once we set off again, the one-nave church of Santa Maria and a quaint little basket with unusual dimensions stand out. After leaving O Leboreiro, there is a short stone bridge of medieval origin over the Rio Seco. Now, it awaits an annoying stretch beside the road. A fountain is a good opportunity to rinse one's face. One plunges into a forest that leads past the beautiful bridge, with several arches, over the Fureleos stream. A few metres and you leave the 'Camino' for the hotel where you sleep in Melide. The last milestone marks 53.858 in Santiago.
In a nutshell. from hotel to hotel: 15.1 km, about 5h15h walk + 2h breaks, 2.9 km/h, 65m asl.
