Luigi Brioschi Refuge
Access
The hut is located on the summit of the Northern Grigna (Grignone) and can be reached via various hiking routes from the Valsassina and Lake Como slopes.
The most popular access is from Piani dei Resinelli (1278 m) following the Direttissima della Grigna Settentrionale path, which climbs steeply along the south-eastern slope of the mountain. The route initially crosses wooded areas and then increasingly open and rocky environments until it reaches the summit ridge and the peak of the Grignone where the refuge is located. The itinerary is of E difficulty with some steep sections and can be challenging in the presence of residual snow or wet ground.
Piani dei Resinelli (1278 m) - ↑ 1130 m - E - 3h30
A second, much-used access route starts from Pasturo (641 m) following the path that crosses the pastures of Alpe Cova and climbs the long southern ridge of the mountain to the summit. The path is longer but more regular and crosses various environments including woods, pastures and high altitude scree slopes.
Pasturo (641 m) - ↑ 1770 m - E - 4h30
From the western side, it is also possible to reach the hut from Cainallo (1280 m) via the path that crosses the Grigna karst plateau and reaches the peak via the northern slope. The route is less steep but longer and subject to frequent fog in the event of unstable weather conditions.
Cainallo (1280 m) - ↑ 1130 m - E - 3h30
In the winter period, the ascent can be made on mountaineering skis or snowshoes, but requires adequate experience due to exposure to the wind and the presence of steep, icy sections along the final part of the mountain.
Introduction
The Luigi Brioschi Refuge stands on the summit of the Northern Grigna (Grignone), the highest peak of the Grigne group in the Lombard Pre-Alps. Situated at an altitude of 2410 metres, it dominates the Valsassina and the Lake Como basin, constituting one of the most extensive vantage points in the entire Lombardy Pre-Alpine sector.
The structure is owned by the Club Alpino Italiano - Milan Section and is dedicated to Luigi Brioschi, a figure linked to the history of mountaineering in Lombardy. Thanks to its position directly on the summit of the mountain, it is a popular excursion destination and an important reference point for ascents to the Grignone.
.Description
The refuge is located directly on the summit of the Northern Grigna, in an alpine environment characterised by extensive karst phenomena typical of the limestone mountains of the Grigne. The landscape is dominated by furrowed fields, dolines and rocky outcrops that shape the vast plateau at the summit.
The isolated and dominant position allows an extremely wide view encompassing much of the Lombardy Pre-Alps and the western Alpine arc. To the south, the view extends to Lake Como and the peaks of the Southern Grigna, while to the north, the massifs of the Valtellina and the Rhaetian Alps are visible.
The first shelter on the summit was built at the end of the 19th century in response to the growing mountaineering attendance at the mountain. Over the course of time, the structure was enlarged and renovated until it became the current refuge, which offers hospitality to hikers during the opening period.
Today, the refuge is the final destination of the main ascent routes to the Grignone and is an important excursion reference point for the entire Grigne group.
