Sassetta

Introduction
Sassetta is a small hillside municipality located in the southern part of the province of Livorno, in Tuscany. Immersed in the green Metalliferous Hills, the village stands at an altitude of about 330 metres above sea level, in an area rich in woods, springs and paths. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, when it was fortified and linked to the vicissitudes of the powerful Pisan Orlandi family. Today Sassetta is a fascinating destination for those seeking tranquillity, unspoilt nature and an authentic atmosphere. Its historical and architectural heritage, combined with its vocation for wellness and slow tourism, makes it a popular stop along the Costa degli Etruschi.
Description
The municipal territory of Sassetta extends over a hilly area typical of the Mediterranean maquis, crossed by small streams and dotted with chestnut groves, holm oaks and cork trees. The natural environment is particularly protected and enhanced thanks to the presence of the Poggio Neri Forest Park, an area equipped for hiking and environmental education, offering numerous paths for walking, trekking and outdoor activities.
Historically speaking, Sassetta was once an important fortified centre belonging to the Republic of Pisa. After alternate events, it passed under Florentine control and finally became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Its history is closely linked to mining and metallurgical activity, as witnessed by the place name itself, which recalls the presence of 'sassi' or rocks, and to the working of iron as far back as Etruscan times. The medieval castle, once a symbol of local power, was destroyed in the 16th century, but some sections of the ancient walls are still visible in the urban fabric.
The current economy of Sassetta is mainly oriented towards agriculture, with the production of extra virgin olive oil, chestnuts and honey, but above all towards rural and thermal tourism. The presence of the Terme di Sassetta spa, a modern wellness centre fed by a natural spring at 51°C, has strengthened the village's attractiveness as a destination for relaxation and body care.
The local culture is expressed in festivals and popular traditions that animate the village in different seasons. These include the Chestnut Festival, which celebrates one of the area's most typical products with food stands, music and historical re-enactments. Sassetta's cuisine is that of the genuine Tuscan Maremma, with dishes based on game, mushrooms, rustic soups and chestnut desserts. Local handicrafts still include woodwork and ceramics.
For hiking enthusiasts, Sassetta is the starting point for itineraries winding through woods and panoramic ridges. The "Anello del Poggio Neri" trail or the path leading to the old copper mine offer interesting ideas for those who want to get to know the territory in an active way. In addition, the proximity to the medieval villages of Suvereto and Castagneto Carducci, as well as to the sea of the Etruscan Coast (about 15 km away), makes Sassetta an ideal base for exploring this part of Tuscany.
