Access

The mountain hut can be reached from Breuil-Cervinia by following the dirt road that leads to the Plan Maison locality and then ascending along the path that leads to Oriondé, a wide plateau of morainic origin. The climb does not present any particular technical difficulties, but does require training due to the difference in altitude, which is close to 900 metres. On the way there are sweeping views of the Grand Tournalin, Monte Rosa and the Grandes Murailles, with the Matterhorn unmistakably dominating the scene.

Introduction

Situated on the Aosta Valley side of the Matterhorn, the refuge belongs to the Club Alpino Italiano (Turin section) and is dedicated to the Savoy royal house. The original construction dates back to 1928 and since then has been a constant reference point for mountaineers heading towards the Cresta del Leone, the Italian normal route to the summit. The building, simple and functional, maintains a spartan atmosphere, in line with its vocation as a support point for those who live the mountain in an authentically alpine key.

Today, the Duca degli Abruzzi continues to be a focal point for mountaineers heading for the summit, but also a destination for expert hikers who wish to experience high altitude without pushing themselves as far as the glacial areas. The surrounding environment, characterised by high-mountain pastures and moraine formations, preserves evident traces of glacial modelling, offering insights of geological and naturalistic interest.

The refuge is generally open in the summer season and offers refreshments and overnight accommodation. Its position, isolated but easily accessible by day from Breuil-Cervinia, makes it a privileged place to watch the sunrise over the great mountains of Valtournenche and to immerse oneself in the atmosphere of the great mountaineering tradition linked to the Matterhorn.
