Dante Livio Bianco Refuge
Access
Introduction
The refuge is located at an altitude of 1910m in the upper Meris Valley, on the eastern shore of the Sottano della Sella Lake, at the foot of the northern slope of Monte Matto (Maritime Alps Natural Park): the refuge replaces the older "Monte Matto" bivouac, which stood at the Soprano della Sella Lake, destroyed by fire at the end of the last war.
Description
Owned by the C.A.I. section of Cuneo, the hut is a solid stone construction with sheet metal roofing. On the whole, the construction with its simple and essential lines harmonises well with the surrounding environment. It was built in 1963, in memory of Dante Livio Bianco, partisan commander and strong Cuneo mountaineer who fell on 12 July 1953 from the Cima di Saint Robert in the Gelas group. Renovated for the first time in 1982 and again in 1999-2000-2008, it has around fifty beds in rooms and a dormitory. It has indoor and outdoor toilets, showers with hot water, heating and telephone service. A winter room with a capacity of fourteen beds with blankets and mattresses is available during closed periods.
