Alto Garda Bresciano Park
Introduction
Description
It includes the western basin of Lake Garda, from the municipality of Salò to the border with Trentino, covering an area of about 38,000 hectares. It is an area of remarkable beauty due to the strong contrasts that unfold within it: the blue of the waters contrasts with the green of the terraced hills covered with olive and citrus trees and, to a lesser extent, vines, while higher up, mountainous ridges dominate the landscape, plunging steeply into the waters of the lake. With its great altimetrical variation (from 65 to 2000m), the park encompasses two distinct territorial realities of great natural and landscape value: the Garda Riviera, with climatic and vegetation characteristics of a Mediterranean nature, and the alpine ecosystem of the hinterland. The park has an exceptional biodiversity, both plant and animal. Just a few kilometres away, as the crow flies, one goes from Mediterranean vegetation formations to hornbeam and oak forests, to splendid beech and mugo forests. The park is also home to the Foresta Gardesana Occidentale, the largest state forest in Lombardy. Mammals include ibex, chamois, roe deer and deer. The nesting avifauna is very rich, including the golden eagle, goshawk, short-toed eagle, peregrine falcon, black grouse, black grouse, capercaillie, rock partridge, eagle owl and dwarf owl. Occasionally, a few brown bears from nearby Trentino make an appearance. The Garda Riviera is a popular tourist destination; not to be outdone is the picturesque hinterland, which offers an intricate network of forest roads and paths leading to refuges, bivouacs and rural accommodation facilities.
