Montevecchia and Curone Valley Park
Introduction
Description
Located in eastern Brianza, the park encompasses the Curane Valley, the Montevecchia relief and the flat area crossed by the Molgora stream and its tributaries. Although the area is heavily urbanised, the park contains important areas of natural interest, woods, meadows and wetlands that alternate with historical and cultural landscapes. The northern sector has a rugged appearance, with steep slopes furrowed by the Curone and Molgoretta streams. These are the best-preserved areas where riparian thickets and significant forest formations can be found. The major fauna is represented by no less than 28 species of mammals, including foxes, weasels and beech martens. Among birds, there are numerous nationally and internationally protected species. In particular, the park is populated by diurnal and nocturnal birds of prey such as the tawny owl and the little owl. From a landscape point of view, the most significant sector is the central one, with the Mlontevecchia relief surrounded by terraced hillsides covered with small vineyards, interspersed with bushes of sage, rosemary and minor aromatic herbs. These are typically Mediterranean crops that have found on the hills of Brianza a microclimate suitable for their development, a fairly rare occurrence in Lombardy and one that gives the park its unique character. On the southern edge of the park lies the Po Valley where the agro-livestock farms are located, with cereal and fodder crops. The park contains important historical-architectural elements: traces of Neolithic and Iron Age villages, remains of Roman fortifications. There are also notable elements of rural and religious architecture.
