Nomaglio
Access
The geographical layout of Nomaglio makes it necessary to use a car to reach the municipality, as it is not served by the metropolitan railway system. The main accesses are along the provincial road della Serra, passing through the morainic area of Ivrea. Bus services connect Nomaglio to the larger centres in the valley and to Ivrea, the regional railway hub. Parking possibilities are limited by the particular morphology of the village, characterised by narrow streets and slopes. The nearest airport is Turin Caselle, which can be reached in about an hour's drive.
.Introduction
Nomaglio is a small mountain municipality in the Metropolitan City of Turin, located on the slopes of the Mombarone massif, within the Dora Baltea valley, in the heart of Canavese. The territory, dominated by the morainic Serra di Ivrea, offers panoramic views over the valley and is characterised by the widespread presence of chestnut groves, which still remain a fundamental economic resource. The natural environment, made up of woods and hills, offers a variety of landscapes that change with the seasons, making Nomaglio representative of Piedmont's small Alpine towns.
Description
The historical context of Nomaglio is intertwined with the history of the Canavese area: the lords of Settimo Vittone, feudal lords of several surrounding territories, who died out in the 18th century in the Mola di Settimo, resided here. There are many historical testimonies, including the ecomuseum system of the chestnut, supplemented by a signposted outdoor route that leads to historical chestnut groves, ancient cottages ('benne') and field drying houses. Recent archaeological discoveries, such as Celtic knife handles and monolith fragments, suggest that the area was already inhabited in protohistoric times and linked to the trade routes between the plains and the Alpine valleys.
The municipality retains many rural traditions, mainly related to chestnut growing and small-scale agriculture, which represent the main local economic activity. These traditions are also handed down through patronal festivals and fairs that, despite their sobriety, nourish a sense of community. Occasions for meeting and celebrating local culture are complemented by a lively attention to historical memory, fostered by ecomuseum initiatives and cultural events that involve residents and visitors alike.
Nomaglio is surrounded by hiking itineraries that develop between the Serra d'Ivrea and the Mombarone massif, passing through wooded landscapes, ancient mule tracks and panoramic viewpoints over the Dora Baltea. The ecomuseum of the chestnut, the centuries-old chestnut trees and the 'buckets' are stops of interest for those wishing to discover the particularities of the territory: the area is also mentioned for the presence of menhirs and recently studied prehistoric remains. The variety of routes makes the area suitable for hikers and nature enthusiasts, who can supplement their visit with insights into local history and typical agricultural activities.
