Description

Going up the Evançon Valley, better known as the Ayas Valley, after not even five kilometres you come to the municipality of Challand-Saint-Victor, located in a sunny position, in an area sheltered from the wind and dry climate. It is made up of several villages, the main one, Villa, being located at an altitude of about 750m. It is an area of very ancient anthropisation, in fact there are traces dating back to the Aeneolithic age, but the very name of the village immediately reminds us of the Middle Ages and the events of the Challant family, which had its original nucleus in this municipality. The ruins of the castle of Villa, probably dating back to the 10th century, remind us that this was the favourite residence of Ebalo I of Challant, the main architect of his family's fortunes from 1295, when he renounced the viscountcy of Aosta in exchange for the castellany of Montjovet. Not even the construction of the castle of Verrès decreed the immediate decline of that of Villa. It was in fact here that Caterina di Challant and her husband Pierre d'Introd, who carried out further fortification work, resided in the mid-15th century. Lastly, not to be overlooked is the presence on the municipal territory of the nature reserve of Lake Villa, enclosed in a natural basin of glacial origin and famous for the presence of rare species of aquatic plants.
