Introduction

Casteldelfino is a small municipality in the province of Cuneo, in Piedmont, located at an altitude of 1,296 metres in the mid Varaita Valley, in an area of great naturalistic charm at the foot of Monviso. The village lies on a sunny slope, surrounded by larch woods and pastures, and maintains an authentic atmosphere, linked to Alpine tradition. Its position makes it a strategic point of passage for those travelling along the paths that climb towards the Upper Valley and the Colle dell'Agnello, one of the highest passes in Europe.

Description

The municipal territory is entirely mountainous and includes numerous historic hamlets, linked by ancient paths and mule tracks. The views are dominated by the peaks that crown the valley, with spectacular views of Monviso and the surrounding peaks. The climate is typically alpine, with cold, snowy winters and short, cool summers, ideal for hiking.

The history of Casteldelfino has its roots in the Middle Ages: the village was founded as a feud belonging to the Dauphinis of Viennois, from whom it derives its name. Its strategic position, along the communication routes to France, made it an important garrison until modern times. Remains of fortifications and medieval architecture can still be seen, along with the stone houses and slate roofs that characterise the village.

The traditional economy has been based for centuries on livestock farming, mountain agriculture and cheese production. Today, alongside these activities, tourism plays an increasingly significant role, with family-run accommodation facilities, alpine refuges and agritourisms. The production of alpine pasture cheeses, cured meats and honey represents a local gastronomic heritage, which is also valorised in village festivals and fairs.

The culture and traditions of Casteldelfino are expressed in religious celebrations, patron saint festivals and mountain-related events. The Occitan language and customs are still alive and contribute to preserving the identity of the place. Among the most heartfelt events are the summer festivals in the hamlets and the days dedicated to traditional crafts.

In terms of tourism and hiking, Casteldelfino is an ideal base for exploring the Upper Varaita Valley. Paths and trails suitable for different levels of experience lead to destinations such as the Bagnour Refuge, immersed in one of the largest pine forests in the Alps, the Camoscere lakes and the Colle dell'Agnello. The area is appreciated in every season: in summer for trekking and MTB, in autumn for the colours of the forests, in winter for ski mountaineering and snowshoeing.
