Acqui Terme
Introduction
Description
Acqui Terme was founded by the Romans on the left bank of the Bormida River. What marked the fortunes of Acqui were the sulphurous thermal waters. So the first appointment, almost a ritual, for those arriving in the town is the Piazza Bollente. In the centre is a marble aedicule built in 1879 by architect Giovanni Cerruti, from which sulphurous-salty-bromine-iodine water gushes out at 75°C. Also worth seeing are the remains of the Roman aqueduct, the Paleologo castle, the Roman Basilica of St Peter, the archaeological site of the Roman pool and the beautiful cathedral. Its renowned wine is Brachetto DOCG.
