On 18 February 1835, Joseph-Auguste-Melquior Duc, known locally as Monseigneur Duc, was born in Châtillon. He was a Catholic archbishop and mountaineer, and is also remembered as a historian of the Aosta ValleyAosta in his highly significant work *Histoire de l’Église d’Aoste*. Joseph-Marie Henry, the first person to summit the peak in 1913, named Punta Joseph-Auguste Duc (2,810 m) in the Costiera dell’Aroletta between Ollomont and Bionaz after him.
