On 8 September 1828, Antonio Tonini was born in Cavergno, in what is now the municipality of Cevio (Canton Ticino), Antonio Tonini, a geographer and mountaineer known for several important first ascents in the area of what are now the Lanzo Valleys. Among the best known are Monte Collerin (30 July 1857), Croce Rossa (1857), theUia di Ciamarella (31 July 1857), the Uia di Bessanese (31 August 1857) and the Uia di Mondrone (1857). A peak is named after him: Punta Tonini (3,324 m), near the Uia di Ciamarella.
