In the winter of 1990–91, a group of mountaineers from the Academic Alpine Club of theUniversity of Kyoto organised an expedition to climb Kawagarbo (6,740 m) in the Hengduan mountain range in China. Their expedition coincided with an attempt by a Chinese group to reach the summit. Their mountaineering activities provoked significant protests within the local Tibetan community due to the mountain’s cultural and religious significance. On the night of 3 January 1991, an avalanche struck the camp, killing all seventeen members of the expedition in one of the deadliest mountain accidents in history.
