On 18 June 1886, George Mallory, a British mountaineer known for his many ascents and for having attempted the ascent ofEverest in 1924: on that occasion, he lost his life, leaving behind a great deal of uncertainty as to whether he had actually succeeded in becoming the first man to reach the highest peak on Earth.
