On 8 September 1990, Cosimo Zappelli, a Tuscan mountaineer known for several major ascents in the Mont Blanc Massif alongside Walter Bonatti, died on Pic Gamba (Aiguille Noire de Peuterey). During his lifetime, he was also a ski instructor and mountain guide, and served as President of the Courmayeur Mountain Guides’ Association. Among other things, he was also the author of the first book to catalogue the mountain huts and bivouacs of the Aosta Valley. The Mountaineering School of the Viareggio branch of the CAI is named in his honour.
