On 28 September 1953, Baron Carlo Franchetti, a mountaineer and speleologist known for his many ascents in the Dolomites as well as hisextensive caving work, which led him to discover, for example, the Pastena Caves in Ciociaria. A mountain refuge in the Gran Sasso and another in Cortina d’Ampezzo are named after him.
